The crisis facing the ocean is the biggest environmental issue of our time, because a healthy ocean is fundamental to all life on Earth.

The ocean is under threat from pollution, climate change and overfishing. The UN’s World Ocean Assessment found that much of the ocean is seriously degraded, with changes and losses in its structure, function and benefits. Finding innovative ways to protect our seas is vital.

We are committed to protect and preserve oceans. We have redesigned our entire model, from mission and material design, to operations and collaborations, to be able to provide our customers with affordable and sustainable products.

We focus on scalable solutions to help families save money. We can significantly reduce environmental impact by making sustainability affordable. We believe that investing in scalable solutions is essential to transform our industry and improve accessibility for all.

Our Impact Framework

Being tied to the ocean, our framework is focused on water stewardship, preventing plastic pollution and developing a circular model that minimises harm to our ecosystems. We take a systemic approach to implementing change and have identified five key impact areas in our business that will accelerate our progress towards a sustainable future. We have analysed our environmental impact from design to end of life and consider available best practices through our entire operations and supply chain.

  • From The Ocean, For The Ocean

We have partnered with climate scientists at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) to develop a textile made from seaweed.

Commencing in February 2022, UTS climate scientists will be building a prototype fibre developed in response to Piping Hot’s ambition to protect oceans for future generations.

The biobased solution will sequester carbon from the ocean and reduce the environmental impact of synthetic fibres.

  • Choose Plastic Free

The best thing we can do to stop ocean pollution is to stop it at the source.  Piping Hot uses 100% cotton to make hoodies and tees, removing polyester fibres to reduce plastic use and prevent microplastic shedding.

Piping Hot is contributing to the United Nations Ocean Decade (2021-2030) to push forward a global knowledge revolution to create the ocean we want.

Piping Hot has developed a capsule clothing range to raise awareness about microplastics and how to reduce their shedding from clothing.

    Explore the Deep

UNESCO has made ocean science a global priority, as the ocean holds the keys to an equitable and sustainable planet.

The deep ocean is the last frontier on Earth. Less than 19% of the ocean surface has been mapped. It has unlocked innovative scientific research that has led to life-saving vaccines, with so much more to discover.

In our latest collection, we worked with scientists to illustrate the underwater life of the deep ocean.

  • Protecting Ancient Forests

Keeping forests standing is essential to protecting millions of species, stabilising climate, and protecting Indigenous and community rights.

We have joined Canopy Planet #Pack4Good to ensure our products and packaging doesn't come at the expense of the world's most ancient and endangered forests.

We've published our comprehensive forest sourcing policy and have joined #canopystyle to shift the viscose supply chain towards more sustainable alternatives.

  • Blue Solutions

Piping Hot is contributing to the agenda for Australia’s UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

We have been participating in ocean stakeholder forums in order to develop solutions that better protect our ocean ecosystems.

We see value in collaborating with and amplifying the work of scientists, educators, activists, and other ocean stakeholders.

  • Volvo Ocean Lovers Festival

We partnered with Volvo and the Ocean Lovers Festival to share hope, solutions and action for the ocean.

Bondi’s Iceberg Club members set out on a 2km ocean swim wearing Piping Hot swimwear.

The range is made from recycled materials including plastic bottles, reducing our greenhouse emissions and diverting single-use plastics from waterways.

  • 2020 Impact Report

We have ambitious targets and have achieved some promising results.

We have set out our sustainability framework, which outlines the five focus areas that contribute to our business mission.

Our 2020 Impact Report shares our progress so far, as we work to build scalable solutions that help families save money and protect oceans.

  • Measuring our Impact

Every product has an impact. Measuring our impact enables us to make better decisions to protect oceans.

We measure the environmental impact of our product using a Life Cycle Analysis. This calculates our use of water, energy and waste.

Transparency of this data gives customers visibility of the impact of their purchase and keeps us focused on our mission.
